GDC 2015: Designing Morally Difficult Characters, Responsibly

Aw shot. This year the GDC host some really interesting and valuable lectures and talks and I can’t afford the time.  There are so many interesting things this year I could not even decide of what I should see and what not. Especially the lecture by Dan Nagler about ‘Designing Morally Difficult Characters, Responsibly’ is interesting.

Designing Morally Difficult Characters, Responsibly by Dan Nagler
This lecture presents narrative techniques for designing morally problematic player characters: how to invite empathy with those characters without condoning their actions, while ensuring an engaging, meaningful experience for players. The Senate Immersion Module is used as a case study, with extensive additional examples drawn from throughout the games industry.

A small list of talks I would love to attend…

  • Designing Morally Difficult Characters, Responsibly by Dan Nagler
  • Computers Are Terrible Storytellers – Let’s Give the Humans a Shot by Stephen Hood
  • Game Design Workshop: Day 1
  • New Approaches to F2P Game Design by Ethan Levy
  • The Design in Narrative Design
